What Is Periodic Inspection and Why Is It So Important?

29 Dec 2025

Regular inspection of equipment used in workplaces is one of the cornerstones of occupational safety. Periodic inspection ensures that these checks are carried out systematically and in accordance with standards. So what exactly is periodic inspection and which equipment is it mandatory for?

What Is Periodic Inspection and Why Is It So Important?

What Is Periodic Inspection?

Periodic inspection is the process of checking work equipment by authorized personnel at specified intervals. These checks are performed to determine whether the equipment is operating safely, whether there is any wear or damage, and whether it complies with standards.

Which Equipment Is Subject to Periodic Inspection?

According to the Regulation on Health and Safety Conditions in the Use of Work Equipment, the following equipment is subject to periodic inspection:

Equipment Requiring Annual Inspection:

  • Lifting and handling equipment (cranes, forklifts)
  • Elevators and escalators
  • Pressure vessels and boilers
  • Lifting devices (hoists, chain blocks)

Equipment Requiring Inspection at Specific Intervals:

  • Compressors
  • LPG tanks and installations
  • Steam boilers
  • Pressurized gas cylinders

Accreditation Requirement After 2024

As an important development, the requirement for accredited bodies has started for certain equipment as of 31.12.2023:

  • Tower cranes
  • LPG tanks and installations
  • Escalators
  • Suspended access equipment

Inspections of this equipment can now only be performed by organizations accredited by TÜRKAK.

Consequences of Not Having Periodic Inspection

1. Risk of Occupational Accidents Uninspected equipment can cause unexpected failures and occupational accidents. These accidents can have fatal consequences.

2. Legal Sanctions If a lack of periodic inspection is detected during audits by labor inspectors, an administrative fine is imposed on the business.

3. Insurance Issues In accidents caused by equipment that has not been periodically inspected, insurance companies may refuse to pay compensation.
